This time of year, it is common for lawns to get overwatered and overfertilized. Both can be avoided and will actually save you some work (mowing, reseeding, etc.) and some money!

Fertilizer

We recommend using an organic lawn fertilizer like Gardner & Bloome Natural & Organic Lawn Fertilizer. Not only is it organic, but it has beneficial microbes and mycorrhizae which benefit your soil and then directly benefits your lawn. Just feed once every 2-3 months. The real time saver is that since it is organic it feeds slowly, reducing excess growth (and mowing!) and consistently– yet still provides that deep green color we desire in our lawns!

Watering

Watering lawns can be tricky in our climate. It is best to water in the morning, preferably between 5 am and 10 am. Make sure you are watering thoroughly by running your sprinklers long enough to saturate the soil and not just the surface.

Additionally, if your sprinklers are spraying too high above the lawn/overspray, you are wasting water! A lot of water from sprinklers evaporates into the air, so it’s very important to be sure they are operating correctly.

You can also pick up our FREE WaterWise guide at the nursery, which can explain it in more detail than I can here. Our guides walk you through general irrigation practices, irrigation tests and maintenance, and tips for watering Trees vs. shrubs vs. lawns. Our staff can help you with your particular situation as well.

If you are having lawn problems, we first recommend checking your watering using the tips in our WaterWise Guide. If that doesn’t solve it, you may have lawn moths or lawn fungus.

Please bring a photo of the area with details of your watering system so our staff can help you solve the problem. You can have a nice lawn here in the Central Valley, but it does take a little work!

Happy Summer!

Thanks for the tips! I am going to spend some time working on the backyard this weekend before 4th of July rolls around. Also found some good summer lawn care suggestions here — http://www.evergreenturf.com/lawn-care/summer-health.php — I have a sod lawn in Arizona so it definitely takes some watering during the summer months!
